Melatonin supplements have been touted for years as a natural sleep aid. Now, it’s available as a vape with claims that vaping melatonin delivers results faster through the bloodstream than waiting on the effects of a pill. Vaping has been popular in recent years, although new reports state the dangerous effects of using vaporizers. Now, experts are skeptical as to whether vaping melatonin is a good idea.
First, let’s take a look at what melatonin is and how it could help you get a good night’s sleep. Melatonin is a natural hormone the body produces to regulate the sleep cycle. According to the National Sleep Foundation, melatonin levels lower during daylight hours, and increase when it’s dark. Melatonin supplements help recalibrate your sleep cycle if you’re experiencing jet lag or work swing shifts, for example.
What’s the difference in taking a melatonin pill versus vaping?
When you take a melatonin pill, the body has to metabolize it first. The liver processes it and then sends the effects of the pill through your bloodstream. Eventually, it reaches your brain, where it takes an effect on sleep hormone production. Vaping a melatonin product does, in fact, deliver it faster by sending concentrated doses directly into the lung’s alveoli (tiny air sacs). But this method may not be as safe as it sounds.
What’s the problem with vaping melatonin?
One issue with vaping melatonin is that the dosages are not regulated. Brands manufacture varying dosages of melatonin vape juice, and each comes with their own recommendations for use. This could be a problem, as there is lacking research in the safety of these dosages. And, if not taken properly, melatonin could actually disrupt your sleep cycle, causing more harm than good. If you believe that you may benefit from melatonin supplements, it is best to discuss this with your physician to be certain you take the appropriate amount.
Another issue of melatonin vape is the vaping risks in general. As of January of this year, the CDC reported 57 vaping-related deaths and 2,602 hospitalizations. The direct cause of these incidents is still a mystery. Many of these cases are related to a specific vaping compound found in THC or illicit vapes, and in vitamin E acetate, neither of which are found in the ingredients for melatonin vape. Still, at this time, no vaping product is 100% safe because of a lack of research. Also, melatonin vape may contain harmful ingredients that we don’t yet know much about.
What can I do if I have trouble sleeping?
Sleep-breathing disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea, are known to disrupt the sleep cycle and cause chronic fatigue. One of the most common symptoms of sleep apnea is snoring. While you may be completely unaware that you snore, the effects of untreated sleep apnea may leave you feeling moody, and tired all of the time. You may frequently wake during the night as well. If you are not getting enough sleep or feel tired all of the time, then consider getting a sleep apnea screening in Erie from Dr. Albert Starr.
