Erie, Harborcreek and Millcreek, PA

For patients in the area of Lake Erie, PA that suffer from dental anxiety or other issues that make routine dental care problematic, Laser Dentistry of Erie offers sedation dentistry.

Who is a good candidate for sedation dentistry?

Many people suffer from some level of fear and anxiety over going to the dentist but for some individuals, this anxiety can be extreme or even result in a phobia related to dental visits. In fact, some people even avoid going to the dentist because they are afraid.

If you have a profound fear of going to the dentist, sedation dentistry allows you to receive the care you need, but without the worry. At Laser Dentistry of Erie, we use sedatives that have been proven to be both safe and effective, even for children.

Certain pre-existing conditions might prevent you from being a candidate for sedation dentistry.

These conditions include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Pregnancy
  • Allergy to sedatives
  • Central nervous system depression
  • Glaucoma

Types of sedation

The most common type of sedation is oral sedation, administered in the form of pills, tablets or liquids. Sedation will not put you to sleep; instead, it puts you in a relaxed state, yet still aware of your surroundings and able to communicate with those around you. Another sedation option is nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas” that is inhaled through the nose. The gas quickly relaxes the patient and wears off mere minutes following the procedure.

Sedation dentistry also is ideal for patients with some of the following conditions:

  • Difficulty holding the jaw open or controlling muscles for prolonged period of time
  • Difficulty reacting to local anesthesia
  • Strong gag reflex
