Erie, Harborcreek and Millcreek, PA

At Laser Dentistry of Erie, Dr. Albert Starr provides same-day dentistry to craft custom-made crowns. Dental crowns often are recommended to repair a severely damaged tooth or as the final step to a root canal. For many years, receiving a dental crown took at least two appointments, scheduled a couple of weeks apart. Technological advancements mean that getting a crown is more convenient than ever, thanks to our in-office milling system. Read on to learn more about how Laser Dentistry of Erie can supply you with a crown in just a single dental appointment, minimizing your need to leave home during the coronavirus pandemic.

How fast can I get a dental crown?

In the past, getting a crown required at least two appointments, which meant wearing a temporary crown for a couple of weeks, and then returning to our general dentist office in Erie to receive your permanent crown. During the coronavirus pandemic, we understand that you may wish to minimize how often you leave your home. But, a worldwide pandemic doesn’t mean that teeth won’t become damaged or in need of a same-day crown in Harborcreek.

Dr. Starr can speed up the entire process by using our CAD/CAM technology and Planmeca Planscan. This technology allows us to complete your permanent crown in just a few hours instead of a few weeks. This process is rather different from what you may have experienced getting crowns in the past.

Step 1: Exam and Prep

We still take impressions before constructing your crown, but rather than use a traditional mold, we use an intraoral scanner to take digital images of the tooth being treated. This is faster and easier than the “old-school” method, without the mess or nasty taste of “the goop.” After you receive a local anesthetic to ensure you don’t feel any discomfort, Dr. Starr prepares the tooth for your new crown.

Step 2: Crown Creation

After the intraoral scanner does its work, we transmit the images immediately to create design plans for your new, custom-made crown. A three-dimensional model is taken, providing a comprehensive image of what your restored tooth will look like. Thanks to the Planmeca system, we can fabricate these crowns in our office, sometimes in as little as an hour—a huge improvement over the two-week turnaround that was typical in the past. The finished crown is immediately ready to bond into place. Once it’s been tested for bite and fit, the process is complete, and you have a new, permanent crown.

Benefits of Same Day Crowns

  • Convenience – You receive your new crown in one appointment, rather than waiting a few weeks.
  • It only requires one trip to the dentist.
  • Quality – Receiving a same-day crown means that you can expect the same level of quality as a traditional lab-created one.
  • Permanence – Same-day crowns are made fast, but they can last as long as a traditional crown.
