Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame” has been smashing box office records since it came out at the end of April. Despite Thanos’ snap that vanquished half of all beings in the universe, people still seem to be able to relate to this purple, smiling monstrosity. Why are all these big bads always smiling? Is it craziness? Is it satisfaction? - Amusement: Personal amusement makes everyone smile. We laugh at each other pain even when we’re not evil. Grandmaster from “Thor: Ragnarok” has a toothy sideways smile when he’s committed naughty deeds even if he does see them as bad. We may smirk when we see something happen that we enjoy, even if it’s something like a YouTube video of animal or child fails. Don’t worry; if these make you laugh, you’re not alone.
- Winning: The smiles of characters like Thanos and Joker are not necessarily due to traditional motivations. They don’t smile because they’re “happy.” They smile because they believe they’ve won. Who wouldn’t smile if they got their way, especially after months or even years of scheming?
