Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame” has been smashing box office records since it came out at the end of April. Despite Thanos’ snap that vanquished half of all beings in the universe, people still seem to be able to relate to this purple, smiling monstrosity. In fact, it seems like Thanos smiles a lot, especially for a bad guy who claims he doesn’t like what he is doing. He isn’t alone in this, though. Comics and comic book movies alike have notorious villains known for their iconic toothy grins. Marvel has Thanos, Loki, Jonah (from Marvel”s “Runaways”) and the Green Goblin just to name a few recent egomaniacs to appear in Marvel movies or TV shows. DC doesn’t ignore this rule, either. The grinning cinematic and comic villains include Steppenwolf, the Nuclear Family (off of DC Universe’s hit show “Titans”), and, the smiles to top them all: Harley Quinn’s and Joker’s.

Why are all these big bads always smiling? Is it craziness? Is it satisfaction? Well, at Laser Dentistry of Erie, we believe that there are a lot of different factors that make the maniacs grin like a kid with an ice cream cone. A smile can mean a lot of things, but as dental professionals, we’ve got a pretty good understanding of why people smile.

  • Happiness: A smile can mean your happy. That’s the simplest answer. You’re not mad. You are confident. You are convinced you’re correct. Even the grumpiest of villains have been known to crack a smile when they’re feeling themselves (We’re looking at you, Red Skull). Happiness is a side effect of confidence. Steppenwolf in DC’s “Justice League” animated series shows that to us every time we see him on the silver screen.
  • Trickery: A smile can be deceptive. Smiles make you appear more trustworthy. Loki uses this to his advantage. When someone smiles, we assume they are gentler, happier, and trustworthy. That is generally not true when it comes to villains. Ocean Master in DC’s “Aquaman” movie even cracks a smile in front of his people to earn their trust.
  • Amusement: Personal amusement makes everyone smile. We laugh at each other pain even when we’re not evil. Grandmaster from “Thor: Ragnarok” has a toothy sideways smile when he’s committed naughty deeds even if he does see them as bad. We may smirk when we see something happen that we enjoy, even if it’s something like a YouTube video of animal or child fails. Don’t worry; if these make you laugh, you’re not alone.
  • Winning: The smiles of characters like Thanos and Joker are not necessarily due to traditional motivations. They don’t smile because they’re “happy.” They smile because they believe they’ve won. Who wouldn’t smile if they got their way, especially after months or even years of scheming?

What does a smile mean to you?

We know you’re not a maniacal, plotting mastermind bent on destruction and doom (right?), but you need to smile, too. Your smile shows when you’re happy. It makes you appear more trustworthy and attractive. Smiling is a sign of your successes. A white, gleaming straight set of teeth makes you more comfortable showing off your smile. This allows the world to connect with each other. Villains smile, but so do heroes.
