Implanted Supported Dentures

Erie, Harborcreek and Millcreek, PA

Have you lost all your teeth due to gum disease, or because of an injury or some other type of facial trauma? If so, let the restorative professionals at Laser Dentistry of Erie, LLC, restore your smile and your bite with a set of implant-supported dentures.

What are implant dentures?

Unlike traditional dentures or even custom dentures, implant dentures are anchored by multiple dental implants, which are placed strategically into the jawbone of each dental arch. A portion of the implant remains above the gum line, providing an anchor for your specially made dentures to snap into place.

Just like custom dentures and New You dentures that we offer, the replacement teeth in implant dentures will be matched to the shape and color of your remaining natural teeth, as well as the color of your gum tissue, giving you a completely natural look. These replacement teeth are made from impressions that are taken of your teeth and mouth. They are constructed using the finest materials in dentistry.

We also will construct your new dentures to maintain, or even improve, the alignment of your bite. This reduces the risk of other oral health issues, including malocclusion or the development of temporomandibular joint disorder, a jaw dysfunction issue with symptoms that include severe pain in the jaw joints, headaches of migraine intensity, and more.

The advantages of implant dentures

Implant dentures provide comfort, stability, and security.

With implant dentures you can eat, chew, and speak better than before. Also, you will not have to worry about your dentures slipping out of place or having to deal with messy denture adhesives.

You can still remove your implant dentures for cleaning, and to allow your mouth to rest while you sleep.

How long does it take to receive implant dentures?

This depends on the healing process, which is different for each individual patient. Your mouth must heal after the implants are placed. This healing time also allows the implants to fuse into your jawbone, and become stable. On average, the healing time takes approximately five months for implants placed in the lower jaw, and seven months for implants in the upper jaw.

For patients with a significant amount of bone loss, they may require a bone graft to establish enough jawbone to hold the implants.

Are implant dentures right for me?

In addition to the situations above, implant dentures also can be installed as a replacement for patients who already have dentures but have become dissatisfied with them. However, the patient’s gums must be healthy, and they must have adequate amounts of jawbone to sustain the dental implants.

How should I maintain my implant dentures?

Implant-supported dentures still need to be removed at least once per day from the mouth to be cleaned. You also should clean your gums when the dentures are removed to prevent the accumulation of bacteria and plaque, which are the initial building blocks for gum disease. Even without teeth, you can still develop gum disease, so it is important to maintain good oral hygiene.

We also advise removing the dentures before you go to sleep, which allows your mouth to rest.

Why is it important to replace missing teeth?

Living with missing teeth makes it more challenging to eat and chew. Over time, in addition to bone deterioration, consequences of lost teeth include misaligned bite and premature aging. Your risk of other problems such as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) and obstructive sleep apnea also increases. Often times patients with missing teeth feel self-conscious about their smile and may shy away from social gatherings.
